Jesus in the Storms of Life

Usually, a text triggers a question or two that shape these “Living with the Word” reflections.  This one, however, causes many questions.  Here are a few:

– Why did Jesus let them go out in a storm?

– Why would Jesus call Peter out of his boat IN a storm?

– Why did Jesus allow him to sink?  Why did Peter divert his eyes from Jesus?

– How does one sink, even with Jesus’ eyes on you…with Jesus right there!

Clearly, there are many things we don’t understand about the sovereignty of God in the storms of our lives.  The “where is God in my suffering?” question is as old as time.  It is also clear that we are often the cause of our suffering, not God.  This will not be the last time Peter flinches.  Remember that the courtyard story is coming.  Peter denies Jesus, even after saying (essentially), “never again will I take my eyes off you!”  So, while there is much we will never understand and questions we cannot answer, God is faithful and never takes his eyes off us.  This is a promise that holds us in life and in death.
